How To Fit Natural Carpet

Preparation

Before you lay your carpet, it’s important to let it acclimatise to its new environment. This is as simple as leaving the carpet in the middle of the room for 48 hours before fitting. Try to keep the room at a steady temperature of at least 18 degrees whilst you do this.

Make sure your subfloor is as clean and dry as possible. It also has to be completely level, which if you’re unsure about is less than 3mm deviation over a 1m area.

Fitting

Start by laying carpet grippers around the edge of the room, leaving a 5-10mm gap from the wall, (the thicker the carpet, the bigger the gap). The pins on the gripper should face the ceiling and lean towards the wall. Nail these in place all the way around the room.

Apply tackifier to the floor with a roller or trowel as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

Next, take your underlay and unroll it up to the edge of the gripper – it does not go on top of the gripper. Tape up the joins where sheets of underlay meet with single sided carpet tape.

Now, unroll your carpet and rough cut it to the length of the room – leaving at least 6 cm spare over the edges. Stretch the carpet out and attach it to your grippers at one end.

Now apply the adhesive to the underlay where you want to lay your carpet. You might find it easier to roll up the carpet – keeping one end secure on the grippers – this will allow you to easily glue under the secured end. Then simply unroll as you work along the room, keeping the carpet pulled tight.

Attach the other end to the grippers and pull tight across the floor.

Once the glue has set, simply trim off the excess from the carpet and push edges into the gap around the gripper.

To make sure the adhesive takes to the flooring, apply an even, smooth weight to the floor. Specialist equipment is available, but a rolling pin would work just as well.
